Keyboard Lessons For Beginners – The First Two Lessons

Keyboard lessons for beginners, just like piano lessons, usually begin with two basic preparatory lessons. These lessons lay out the foundation for everything that is needed to know about the piano's keys. These are then immediately followed by a series of formal lessons that are designed to meet the level of comprehension and skills beginning piano players have.

{I. Piano Layout}

In this piano lesson, you will have to be familiarized with the different keys. Note that keyboards like pianos only have two types of keys which are distinguishable because of their color – the white and the black keys.

{The White Keys}

The white keys are the natural keys, and are usually the root keys, which are known for their designated musical alphabet letters – A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. Note, note that the music alphabet begins not in A, but in letter C, which is the most basic note in music.

As you can may, the white keys are arranged in such a way that they seem to surround the black keys beside them. Thus, where there are 3 white keys, there are two white keys they seem to surround. And beside these 3 black keys are 4 white keys. For your first piano exercise, find all the white keys on your keyboard and play them either in groups or individually.

{The Black Keys}

The keyboard is divided into sets of two black keys and three black keys. The black keys, depending on the focal point, correspond to sharp (#) and flat (b) notes. As your second exercise, look for all black keys on your keyboard and play them in groups and/or individually.

The importance of knowing the layout of your keyboard is important in allowing you to handle the instruments proficiently. To make things a little less hard on you, you can label each key according to their natural and accidental notes.

{II. Basic Music Notation}

{The Grand Staff}

Pianists use a tool called Grand Staff to record music into a written form. This is used no matter which kind of music is being recorded. When used in music that is played on keyboard, the grand staff has 2 staves.

{Clef Signs of the Grand Staff}

Clef signs are signs used to distinguish the bass and treble notes. The Bass Clef corresponds to notes or keys in the left half of the keyboard while the Treble Clef or the G Clef comprises of the right half of the keys.

{Note Durations and Keeping In Time With Music}

The Music Notation guides keyboardists on how to keep in time with music. It also tells keyboardists the time signature for each tune. Time Signatures usually appear as 4/4, ¾ and 2/4. The top number tells how many beats or counts are in each measure (which appears as a bar on the music notation, separating one measure from another), and the bottom number tells what type of a note receives a single count.
