A Quick Guide To Setting Up An Online Store
There are two ways to go about doing anything: the right way and the wrong way. You can tell if a hardware store is set up the right way if you feel at home in there the minute you walk into the door. Everything is arranged neatly and organized in such a way that you can easily find what you're looking for.
Think of your homepage as the entrance to your hardware store. When somebody comes in and they want to buy a chainsaw, they don't want to have to look everywhere. They want to go straight to the chainsaw section of the store.
They are going to be very disappointed if they go to the chainsaw department and only see one chainsaw on display. Even if it happens to be a huskie and they're looking for a husqvarna chainsaw, they are going to want to be able to choose between the full range of models and sizes.
If you've got a great deal on an echo chainsaw, you're going to want it to attract your customer's attention. To do that, you put it on display together with an eye-catching 'Sale!' sign.
Not everybody who comes into your store for a chainsaw is going to want a husqvarna or an echo. Some people will be looking for a mcculloch chainsaw or some other brand. You need to have them all and the customer needs to be able to compare their features. That way, you are almost sure to make a sale.
So the first thing you need to do is make your homepage easily navigable. You want people to be able to find what they want. You also want to lead them to items they aren't even looking for, but may buy anyway. Taking the hardware store example a step further, if somebody goes into the hardware store for a box of nails and they see a hammer on sale next to the nails, they are probably going to walk out of the store with a new hammer as well.
Think about that concept when you're setting up the store. Find related items to sell and display them prominently. If you are selling books on your website, sell ebook readers right alongside the books. They have a much higher profit margin, so they could end up being your real money maker.
You can see from the hardware store example above that there are a lot of things to consider when you're making an online store. The more thoroughly and professionally you lay out your store, the higher your chances of success. Don't forget the checkout counter, either. Make sure it's set up so that the customer can make his purchase without delays or hassles.
